Problem

Sustainable and efficient agricultural practices are the prerequisite for feeding a growing world population from limited resources. Advances in sensor technology and machine control - provided from automatic steering systems and variable rate application systems - address already crop plant needs of particular zones within a field. Currently these zones cover spots of several square meters. By continuing technological improvements, however, a shift towards treatments of smallest zones down to individual plants are possible.

Aim & Objectives

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the potential for agronomic optimization of crop production based on individual plant treatments. A first step is to get an overview of existing research and products considering treatment of zones down to individual plants (e.g. sensor based weeding). A second step is to identify promising examples of crop plants and operations, within the crop production cycle, that could move towards individual plant treatments. These examples will serve as models for potential agronomic optimization based on individual plant care. In addition to theoretical considerations there is an opportunity to validate these assumptions and results in discussions with customers and expert panels.

Good knowledge in crop management, application and sensor technology.
